… Was the first ever service dog? 

Back in 1928, a man who had lost his sight used his German Shepherd, Buddy, to guide him through the streets. Without Buddy, we might have never known that dogs could help the visually impaired. 

… Has their own sport? 

Schutzhund is a dog sport originally invented in the early 1900s to test the skills of German Shepherds. It’s like the Olympics, but for dogs! Competitors in Schutzhund are tested in three fields: tracking, obedience, protection. While German Shepherds are still the most popular breed for the sport these days,  other breeds are also welcome to take part. 

… tilts their head to see better? 

Ask a German Shepherd pet parent and they’d agree: this dog has the cutest head tilt. But fun fact, this head tilt doesn’t only serve adorable reasons. When a German Shepherd tilts their head, they’re actually improving their line of sight so they’re also trying to see better.

While the most iconic coat is the black and tan German Shepherd, there are also dogs in this breed that have gray, white, and even steele blue fur!

But don’t worry. Even with a thick double coat, German Shepherds can adapt to the Philippine climate with shade, water, and extra care. Although, one thing you should watch out for is their shedding. These dogs shed all year round and require regular brushing.

You’ve probably seen a German Shepherd working hard inspecting luggage at the airport. They’re the first-choice breed for the Philippine National Police and Customs for search operations.

While they’re top tier rescue dogs and secret weapons in the police force, German Shepherds are also incredibly loyal and gentle family pets. They’re very affectionate and are known to be good with children of all ages.
