Trick-Fur-Treat Super Guide for Pet Parents
Before you head out this Halloween, here are the safety reminders every SM Super Pet Parent needs to know.
Loving this year’s Halloween festivities? For a pet parent, holidays are even more fun with trick or treating, scrolling through the cutest pet costumes. But as always, every celebration comes with important safety tips. Here are a few reminders from your SM Super Pets Club family!
Keep the Halloween candy away from your pet
We all know that chocolate is a big no for our pets, but did you know that sugar-free candy and gum can also be toxic? Even empty candy wrappers can pose a risk to your pets if ingested. To be extra safe, make sure to keep the halloween candy out of your pet’s reach.
Secure your pet indoors during trick-or-treat
Handing out treats to your neighbors requires constantly opening and closing your door. This creates a tempting window for your pet to run off outside. For Halloween night and celebrations, we recommend keeping your pets away from the door. You can try securing a dog gate or even letting them in a separate room for the meantime.
Don’t force your pet into a costume
We love dressing up our pets too, but it’s always important to put your pet’s well-being first. For pets that tolerate costumes, make sure that their outfits still allow normal breathing, walking, and sight. Also pay attention to dangling or decorative parts of the costume that could be bitten off or swallowed.
Leash is a must for trick-or-treating
If you’re taking your pet trick-or-treating with you, make sure you have a secure harness and leash. Even the most well-behaved pet could get overwhelmed or too excited at all the fuss happening around them.
Pack the essentials and prepare for the weather
Don’t forget to bring water and a portable bowl. Even if you’re planning a short trick-or-treat route, it’s always best to prepare for possible hot and humid conditions.
Always monitor your pet’s comfort level
Halloween comes with a lot of new experiences for your pets: loud decorations, kids in costumes and masks, more crowds. Avoid forcing your pets into situations they’re uncomfortable in and try picking a less busy time for a trick-or-treating outing!
