For the Introverted Pet Parents: Tips on Socializing
When you’re walking with your pet, do you notice how people feel friendlier or more approachable? Studies have actually shown that pets reduce loneliness and social isolation.
It’s no surprise to us pet parents that having a pet has many health benefits. One benefit often overlooked is how pets help with socializing. When you’re walking with your pet, do you notice how people feel friendlier or more approachable? Studies have actually shown that pets reduce loneliness and social isolation.
But if you’re a new pet parent or worry that mingling might feel awkward, we have a few tips in this week’s article!
Ask about their pet
Think about how much you love your pet–that’s how other pet parents feel too! Small talk with other pet parents doesn't have to be long conversations. Asking them questions like: “What’s your pet’s name” “What’s their breed,” “How old are they,” are already wonderful conversation starters.
Comment on what your pets are doing
If your pet’s already socializing with another pet, take the opportunity to mingle with their parent! Even a comment like “they look like they’re making friends” could lean to a fun chat.
Bring your pet’s favorite treat or toy
Whenever my friend walks her dog, she always gets questions about where she gets her dog’s harness. Sometimes your pet’s accessory or toy could be a great invitation for others to strike up a conversation.
Offer to take photos
Has your pet ever made the cutest pose but you weren’t able to capture it? We’ve all been there. If you see a pet parent struggling to take a selfie with their pet, why not offer to take the photo for them?
Avoid keeping to yourself
If your goal is to socialize, then it’s important to come off as someone approachable. Look up from your phone or hang around in the area where there are more dogs present!
Take your dog to the Paw Park
Visiting a Paw Park is a great low-stakes environment to interact with other pets (and pet parents). You’re already in a community with fellow pet parents and you can always take a break when socializing becomes a bit too overwhelming. If you want to start small, you can also try visiting at less busy times!
