Pet Adoption Tales for the Soul: Inspiring Rescue Stories

“Our mission is to rescue. Our dream is that one day, we don’t have to,” reads the home page of Pawssion Project’s website. Since 2018, the non-profit organization has helped rescue over 500 dogs around the country. To learn more about their story and their commitment to animal rescue, we had a conversation with Pawssion Project founder Malou Perez!

Do you have a favorite rescue story?

Malou: I’ll start with Loki, our ambassa-dog who is now in Canada. He was reported to the page that he was stuck in a sewer in Makati for several days. They were trying to get the puppy but he wouldn’t go out since takot na takot na siya. Cut the long story short, one of our followers from Canada messaged if we could put up Loki for adoption. We got so many applications with pictures of their homes, backyards. We were able to choose the prospects for Loki’s furparents, without knowing that these two are celebrities in Canada. When we did the Zoom interview, even the neighbor knew Loki already. Loki is now living his best life in Canada.

We also hear about “foster fail” stories. Do you get a lot of cases where people take in a shelter pet as a temporary foster but then fall in love and adopt the pet permanently?

Yes, for sure. Isa ako doon. I have almost 50 of my own. 90% of them are foster fails because I usually foster puppies who lost their moms. After that, I couldn’t let go anymore.

One time, I picked up puppy on the way to the shelter. Medyo mukhang daga na siya, super liit and very mangy. The caretakers at the shelter named her Princess Sarah. After two weeks, she was medicated and was fostered by someone. But less than a week after, there was a family emergency so we had to look for another foster. This fosterer was a friend of a volunteer. After a few days, we asked for an update for Princess Sarah, and the fosterer said, “Oh well, I couldn’t let her go anymore.” Princess Sarah even visited us during an adoption drive and she was super playful and running around! That’s my favorite fail of all time.
