Even if you haven’t met a Shiba Inu in real life, I’m pretty sure you’ve seen this iconic breed online. Shibas are not only the stars of the viral “doge” meme, they’re also one of the most popular dog breeds in the world.
For this month’s super pet feature, we’re sharing some fun facts about the Shiba Inu!
Did you know that the Shiba Inu…
Is one of the oldest dog breeds?
Shiba Inus are one of the six native Japanese dog breeds and their history goes back over 2,000 years!
Has a mysterious name?
While “inu” means dog in Japanese, no one’s really certain about the exact meaning behind “shiba.” Since “shiba” means brushwood, some speculate that the name is a tribute to the breed’s reddish brushwood-leaves like coat. Others say that it’s because these dogs used to hunt around the brushwood shrubs in the mountains. A third theory is that “shiba” is translated from an old regional dialect word that means “small”--translating the name to “small dog.”
Almost went extinct?
World War II almost wiped out this entire breed due to bombing raids and distemper. If not for post-war breeding programs, we might have never seen the Shiba Inu again!
Shows cat-like qualities?
With their independence, agility, and reserved behavior, Shibas are often seen as cat-like. And similar to cats, Shiba Inus like grooming themselves! In fact, Shiba Inus are known to be odor-free and are among the cleanest dog breeds.
Has a “Shiba Scream?”
When a Shiba is upset or excited, it sometimes lets out a high-pitched yelp called the “Shiba Scream.” While it sounds intense, it’s not an immediate sign of danger. A Shiba Scream could be the dog’s way of trying to communicate.
Is fiercely loyal?
Shibas tend to be known as dogs that give selective affection, but they’re also fiercely dedicated to their pet parents. Some ways Shibas show their love: 1. Bringing you their favorite toys 2. Sleeping next to you 3. Showing protective behaviors
One of the most touching stories about a Shiba Inu’s loyalty is Mari’s. During a 2004 earthquake in Japan, a Shiba Inu named Mari went inside a collapsed home to save her owner.
