While there’s tons of information about this breed’s long list of accolades, there are also many myths about the Border Collie. We’re here to break down some of them in this month’s Super Breed feature!
Did you know that Border Collies are world record-breakers? A Border Collie was once recognized as the world’s most intelligent dog. Another broke the record for dog skateboarding!
But while there’s tons of information about this breed’s long list of accolades, there are also many myths about the Border Collie. We’re here to break down some of them in this month’s Super Breed feature!
Myth: Since Border Collies are so smart, this dog breed can train themselves.
False! Think about what would happen if the smartest kid in the world received no education? The same would happen to your untrained Border Collie. In fact, this smart breed requires more mental stimulation to keep them engaged.
Myth: Border Collies can adjust to any space and living environment.
It depends! Border Collies need a space where they have room to move. If you live in an apartment or smaller space, you need to make sure these dogs receive intense daily exercise.
Myth: Border Collies need aircon 24/7 in the Philippines.
It depends! While Border Collies are prone to overheating with the country’s climate, they can manage with proper ventilation, shade, and water. It’s also really important to time their outdoor walks during cooler parts of the day.
Myth: Shaving a Border Collie’s fur helps them cool off.
False! Border Collies have a double coat that actually helps regulate their temperature. Shaving this off will make them even more prone to heatstroke and sunburn. It’s better to regularly brush their coat instead and consult about proper grooming.
Myth: Border Collies will only thrive in farms.
False! These dogs were originally bred to herd sheep and regular farm work, but they can do well in other environments too. Border Collies can be in cities and suburban homes but the key is to find activities that can be as stimulating as farm work.
Myth: Border Collies are a great option for a first-time pet owner.
It depends! Raising a Border Collie means keeping up with their high energy, training needs, and managing their heat tolerance. They’re amazing dogs, but we would encourage extra preparation if you’re thinking about getting one as your first pet!
