Super Breed Feature: Chihuahua

Small but sassy is the perfect descriptor for this month’s super dog breed!

Small but sassy is the perfect descriptor for this month’s super dog breed! Are you a parent to a Chihuahua? Or… maybe you’re thinking about getting a Chihuahua.

Either way, this month’s article is for you. Here are some fun facts about the iconic dog breed!

Did you know that the Chihuahua….

  • Is officially the smallest dog breed in the world?

Chihuahuas hold the record for the smallest dog breed for both height and weight.

  • Is named after a Mexican state?

Chihuahua is a real place in Mexico! Having this state as their namesake makes sense since we can trace this dog breed’s roots to Mexico back in the 1800s.

  • Was seen as a sacred breed?

The Aztecs believed that these dogs can help guide souls through the underworld. Back then, when an aristocrat died, a Chihuahua was even buried or cremated with the dead.

  • Thrives in warm weather?

With their origins in Mexico, it’s no wonder Chihuahuas feel right at home with our tropical climate (and why they love having the aircon on full blast too!)

  • Has two types?

There’s a smooth-coat (short-haired) Chihuahua and a long-coat Chihuahua! Smoot-coat Chihuahuas are the more common kind in the Philippines.

  •  Has big brain energy?

The Chihuahua has the largest brain-to-body ratio among dog breeds! Their brains make up 2-4% of their body weight. For reference, human brains take up about 2% of an average person’s body weight.

  • Is a regular in the dog show scene?

Chihuahuas are regular contenders at PCCI dog shows. Don’t let their small size fool you! These dogs are intelligent and quick learners – often standouts at agility competitions and dog sports!

  • Shakes a lot?

With their little fur, Chihuahuas are cold all the time. But it’s also normal for these dogs to shake out of excitement and sometimes nerves too!

  • Is a pop culture icon?

From celebrities like Bruiser in Legally Blonde to Paris Hilton’s iconic Tinkerbell, it’d be hard to find a more culturally iconic dog breed.
