Super Breed Feature: Golden Retrievers

From Buddy in Air Bud to Kathryn Bernardo’s adorable Golden Cloud, these dogs are beloved worldwide.

If we think about iconic dog breeds, Golden Retrievers rank pretty high on our list. From Buddy in Air Bud to Kathryn Bernardo’s adorable Golden Cloud, these dogs are beloved worldwide.

For this month’s Super Breed Feature, we’re listing some reasons this breed is golden.

Did you know that the Golden Retriever…

  • Has Scottish roots?

The Golden Retriever most likely descended from Lord Tweedmouth’s dogs from the 1800s!

  • Is (almost) forever young?

Compared to other breeds, Golden Retrievers’ puppy stage lasts a little longer. In fact, they can stay goofy and playful well into adulthood.

  • Is a go-to choice for therapy dogs?

Goldens are actually one of the most popular therapy dogs worldwide! They’re also known to be particularly sensitive to human emotions too. If you’re sad, you might find your Golden inching closer to rest their head on your lap.

  • Loves the beach?

The beach can be heaven for this water enthusiast. Goldens were actually bred to hunt in water so their coats and paws are naturally inclined for swimming.

  • Has a soft mouth?

Speaking of their hunting past, Goldens used to retrieve birds for game and were tasked not to damage them. This trained them to have excellent control with their bite. Even funner fact: a Golden can actually carry an egg without breaking it!

  • Is an A+ student?

Since they’re eager to please, some trainers joke that Goldens are born with a diploma! They rank among the most intelligent dog breeds and can learn a new trick in five repetitions or less.

  • Might be prone to a tennis ball obsession?

A Golden named Finley actually holds a Guinness World Record for carrying six tennis balls in his mouth at once!

  • Can adapt well to the Philippines?

While Goldens have thick coats, many thrive in a tropical climate with shorter haircuts! As long as you protect your Golden from intense heat, they can make the Philippines their home too.
