Super Breed Feature: Husky

While this breed was bred for the cold, huskies have done well in the Philippines with committed and responsible pet parenting.

If you grew up watching movies like Balto or Eight Below, then you’ve probably dreamt of raising a husky. While this breed was bred for the cold, huskies have done well in the Philippines with committed and responsible pet parenting.

Want to know more about your favorite breed? Here are some fun facts about huskies!

Did you know that the husky…

  • Is built to run?

These dogs were bred to pull sleds over long distances, and some huskies can run up to 160km. That’s like running multiple marathons in one day! Although, a pet husky would be perfectly content with regular (non-marathon length) walks.

  • Has saved an entire town?

During a deathly diphtheria outbreak in Alaska back in the 1920s, the only way to deliver the crucial medicine was through a sled-dog relay across hundreds of miles. Two huskies, Togo and Balto, led this journey that delivered the serum and saved thousands of lives.

  • Can have two different eye colors?

There are huskies with brown eyes, blue eyes, and some even have both! In some rare occasions, these dogs can also have parti-colored eyes, where one eye could be split between two colors.

  • Loves to escape?

Some even call this breed natural “escape artists.” These are very intelligent dogs, and huskies really pay attention to how gates and doors open. Be extra vigilant when escape-proofing your home.

  • Likes to talk?

Huskies are known to howl and even talk back to their humans. Since they were meant to move in packs, huskies have learned through history that howling carries much farther distances than just barking. So if your husky likes “talking back” at you, maybe that’s them signaling you’re part of the team too!

  • Has a coat that shouldn’t be shaved?

If you raise a husky in the Philippines, should I shave their coat so they can adjust better to the warmer weather? Experts actually say no!

A husky’s coat protects the dog from both the cold and the heat. Shaving a husky will actually leave their very sensitive skin vulnerable to sunburn and heat stress. Instead of shaving, brush your husky’s coat frequently, keep them in a cool indoor space, and only trim when needed.
