Super Breed Feature: Pug
Super Breed Feature: Pug
With roots tracing back to 400 B.C., Pugs are one of the oldest dog breeds. And throughout their long history, Pugs have remained popular all over the world, including the Philippines. Here are some of our favorite fun facts about Pugs!
Did you know that Pugs…
Are not related to Bulldogs?
Although they look alike, Pugs actually share more origins with the Pekingese breed!
In a group are called a grumble?
If a group of fish is called a school and a group of birds is called a flock, a group of pugs is called a grumble!
Were bred for Chinese emperors?
Pugs were originally bred to be the companion dogs of Chinese emperors. In fact, their trademark wrinkly face was also a deliberate choice by Chinese breeders. The pattern of the wrinkles on their forehead is meant to resemble the Chinese character for “prince!”
Have a big appetite?
Some even say that Pugs have a similar-sized appetite as a Labrador! The good news is that Pugs aren’t picky eaters. However, the bad news is that they can be prone to overeating, so portioning is extremely important for Pug parents.
Thrive in different living spaces?
These dogs are popular in the Philippines since they can adapt to living in condos and apartments in bustling cities! You might even spot a Pug riding with their owner on a bike.
Are sensitive to heat?
While they don’t mind smaller spaces, the flatter shape of their faces makes them prone to overheating. In this summer heat, make use of fans, cooling mats, or air conditioning to keep your Pugs cool and safe.
Struggle in water?
While going to the beach or pool might be tempting in this weather, Pugs aren’t actually built for swimming. Their compact bodies and short legs make paddling more difficult compared to other dogs. If you want to take your Pug for a swim, we recommend staying by the shallow water or wearing a doggy life vest!
