Tips for training your dog!
Here are some tips for common training problems!
Training your dog is not an easy thing. Even the most experienced pet parents run into trouble when they try teaching their pet new tricks. For this month’s article, we’re sharing some tips for common training problems!
What if my dog always pulls on the leash?
Tip: Try the “stop and go” method. If your dog is pulling hard, stop walking. Wait for your dog to calm down and the leash to go slack before moving forward.
What if my dog ignores me when I call them?
Tip: Avoid using your dog’s name to stop bad behavior. For example, if you catch your dog making a mistake and yell out their name, your pet will have a bad impression of name-calling.
What if my dog doesn’t give back toys?
Tip: If your dog is a toy-hogger, this might be because they’re worried they might not get the toy back. One thing you can try is to build trust over time. Praise your dog when they hand back their toy. Also, don’t end playtime right away when they return the toy—give it back and keep playing.
What if my dog only follows when I have treats?
Tip: Mix up your dog’s rewards! Give your dog toys, head pats, belly rubs, so that they don’t expect a treat every time.
What if my dog can’t focus?
Tip: Go for multiple short training sessions instead of one long, unproductive one. Experts recommend trying three to five minutes at a time. Another tip you can practice is the “look at me” cue. Say your pet’s name and reward them once they look at you. Do this often to build their attention span!
