Most pet training tips are directed for dog parents, but what about cats? Contrary to popular belief, cats can be trained and benefit greatly from training too.

Myth # 1: Cats can’t be trained. 

Cats have a different training style from dogs but they can learn how to sit, fetch, and many other tricks! 

Myth # 2: Cats are too stubborn to learn 

When your pet cat doesn’t seem receptive to training, don’t jump to the conclusion that they’re untrainable. It could be that you haven’t found what motivates them yet. A cat that seems indifferent to a treat could be enticed by a toy. Or a cat indifferent to a toy could be motivated by food. 

Myth # 3: Spraying water stops cats from unwanted behavior 

If you catch your cat scratching your furniture or jumping on a kitchen counter, spraying them with water might temporarily stop the behavior. The downside is that your cat might just learn that they can jump and scratch all they want when you’re not around. Training experts have found that both cats and dogs learn better when they’re rewarded for good behavior instead of punished for bad behavior. 

Myth # 4: If a cat scratches furniture, they’re being naughty 

Trust us, your cat is not ruining your favorite couch on purpose. Scratching is normal cat behavior and a natural instinct. Instead of forcing them to not scratch, it’s way more effective to redirect the behavior. Get a scratching pad or post and you can train your cat to scratch that instead of your couch. 

Myth # 5: Cats don’t need socialization 

We often hear that cats are more low-maintenance or that cats are the more independent pets. Even if your pet cat might like keeping to themselves, it’s still very important to teach them how to socialize. This will be so helpful for when you take your cat to the vet or if you’re living in a condo and have to interact with other people.
