Fleas, Ticks, Worms: Debunking Common Myths about Parasite Control
We’re here to debunk some common myths about pest control and hopefully help keep your pets healthy and safe!
Parasites like fleas, ticks, and worms thrive in hot and humid weather. For the Philippines, a country that has this climate almost year-round, that means parasite risk is a constant worry for pet parents. For this article, we’re here to debunk some common myths about pest control and hopefully help keep your pets healthy and safe!
Myth: Indoor pets have zero risk of getting fleas and ticks
False! Some assume that if their pet never goes outside, then fleas and ticks will never find them. However, these types of pests can be carried into your home through your clothes or things you bring from outside. Even for indoor pets, we recommend staying safe and getting proper preventives.
Myth: One or two doses of preventative medication is enough
False! There’s a reason why vets prescribe continuous use for flea and tick medication. Skipping after just one or two months can trigger pests to restart their reproduction cycles and multiply quickly.
Myth: I can spot if my pet has fleas and ticks!
False! The moment you see a tick or flea on your pet, the chances are: they’ve already been infected for a while. Some worms are also too small for the human eye to see. For these parasites, prevention really is key.
Myth: Puppies and kittens don’t get parasites
False! Unfortunately, newborn pets are actually vulnerable to these types of pests. Listen to your vet’s recommendation: they’ll usually suggest parasite prevention right away.
Myth: Shampoos and natural remedies can replace prescription products
False! If you go into a pet store, you might see a variety of flea and tick shampoos. While they can help remove existing pests on your pet, they don’t help with initial prevention. In terms of homemade natural remedies like citrus sprays or apple cider vinegar, research doesn’t really support their effectiveness. Experts across the board would recommend trusting your vet with tried and tested prevention products.
Myth: I can use the same flea and tick medication for all my pets
False! These medications take into consideration your pet’s age, breed, weight, medical history. Some pets are more attuned to topical medication; some might find oral medications to be more effective. The best course of action is to seek your vet’s advice and opinion.
