Cats and photography don’t always make a great mix. Have you ever spotted your cat make a picture-perfect pose, but as soon as you pull out your phone, they scurry away? We gathered a few tips on how you can take pictures of your cat!
Adjust to your cat’s personality
Forcing a pet to sit still for a photo will stress most cats out. Instead of making your cat adjust to your photoshoot, make the photoshoot adjust to your cat’s personality! Where does your cat feel comfortable? Perhaps you can take photos of your cat while resting in their favorite spot at home!
Practice beforehand
Most cats are adverse to change so familiarize them before taking their photo. Make them get used to you holding up your phone even before snapping a picture. If you want to take a photo with your cat, practice your poses first!
Skip the outfits and costumes
I know, I know. It’s so tempting to dress up your cat or even wear matching outfits. However, this additional change could just put more stress on your cat. A good compromise would be to have your cat wear items they’re already comfortable in. Perhaps they’d be more agreeable posing with their favorite collar or harness!
Turn your flash off
The flash on your phone or camera can not only startle your cat but also risk your cats having “red eyes” in your pictures.
Use burst mode or a fast shutter speed
Even professional photographers will find it difficult to get the perfect cat picture in one shot. Instead of forcing your cat to stay still, why not capture them in action? You might even get a cooler picture! Burst mode lets you take consecutive photos in quick succession so you can keep snapping away.
Tag a friend
Pet photography isn’t necessarily a one-person job. Having a friend or family member to help can make all the difference. If someone else can help you distract your cat with treats or toys, you can devote all your energy to getting that perfect photo.
