Pet Parent Etiquette 101
If you’re taking your pet to the mall, here are some pet parent etiquette tips to keep in mind!
Pet parenting comes with a lot of responsibility—not just for your pet, but for your community. If you’re taking your pet to the mall, here are some pet parent etiquette tips to keep in mind!
Check if dogs are allowed
Even inside pet-friendly malls, some stores and restaurants might not allow pets. Always check the mall’s policies before bringing your pet!
Keep your pets on a leash
SM Malls require that dogs have leashes when inside the mall and common areas. We also highly recommend that you bring a short (non-retractable) leash so you can keep your pet close to you.
Bring a pet carrier
If you plan on bringing your cat, SM Malls generally require them to be inside carriers or strollers. But for smaller dogs, we also encourage a pet carrier as well. This could make it easier for you and your pet to move around.
Clean up after your pet
When you take your pet outside, always make sure that you have waste bags and wipes with you. SM Malls strongly suggest pet diapers as an option in case of accidents.
Come prepared with pet essentials
In addition to cleaning supplies, make sure to pack water, treats, and other items your pet might need. Even on short trips, it’s important to prepare and make sure your pet will be safe and comfortable.
Ask permission before approaching others
Not everyone is comfortable with pets. If your dog wants to greet other people, make sure to ask for permission first. The same goes with your pet as well. If someone asks to pet or hold your dog, check in to see if your pet is comfortable!
Be mindful when taking photos
We definitely understand how it’s hard to resist taking photos of our pets. While going to the mall can be the perfect photo-op moment, be mindful of other mallgoers too. Try to avoid blocking walkways and entrances as much as possible.
Note: Pet policies can vary between different SM mall branches. We highly recommend checking the specific mall’s pet policies before visiting!
