Super Pets Breed Feature: Toy Poodle

So let’s go on a deep dive and discover some fun facts about this beloved breed!

For this month’s Super Pets breed feature, we’re shedding a spotlight on one of the most popular dogs in the country––the toy poodle!

While all types of poodles are a favorite pet worldwide, toy poodles seem to be the top pick for many Filipinos. So let’s go on a deep dive and discover some fun facts about this beloved breed!

Did you know that the toy poodle…

  • has a coat that’s meant for swimming?

While poodles are style icons for their curly coat, their curls aren’t just for aesthetic purposes. Long ago, poodles were used as water retriever dogs and their trademark coat helped keep them warm while still allowing them to swim!

  • didn’t come from France?

Even though most see poodles as very “French,” these dogs actually have roots in Germany. In fact, the name poodle actually comes from the German word, “pudeln.”

  • adapts well to apartment living?

This is a main reason why toy poodles are a favorite among pet parents in Metro Manila. Since toy poodles are small, have minimal shedding, and are very intelligent, they can thrive well in a condo or apartment.

  • has a relatively long lifespan?

Standard poodles generally live between 10-12 years. Meanwhile, toy poodles can have a lifespan that ranges from 10-18 years!

  • is very smart?

Tons of research ranks poodles as among the smartest dog breeds. If you have a toy poodle, it’s equally important to make sure they get both physical and mental exercise.

  • became popular with the rise of PCCI?

While there’s no documented proof of when toy poodles first came to the country, the toy poodle breed became more well-known around the 1970s and 80s. Some note that this was also the time the Philippine Canine Club Inc. (PCCI) was also growing!

  • can be considered canine-athletes?

Forget the idea that poodles are all prim and proper. With their agility, grace, and intelligence, poodles are some of the toughest competitors in dog sports! PCCI even hosts dog shows and events where toy poodles are tested in obedience and agility trials.
