Why do I need to take my pet to the vet?

We’re here to debunk some myths about vet visits and show why regular check-ups are a must for every pet!

When was your pet’s last check-up? For dogs and cats over a year old, it’s recommended that they see their vet at least once a year. But say, I have the healthiest dog who barely goes outside. That means I don’t have to go to the vet as often, right?

Experts say that’s not the case. In this article, we’re here to debunk some myths about vet visits and show why regular check-ups are a must for every pet!

  1. Going for regular check-ups will cost me more money

False. Early detection and treatment is key to preventing serious health issues and expensive bills down the road. Issues like diabetes, anemia, and heartworms can be managed and even prevented with routine check-ups.

  1. It should be obvious to me if there’s something wrong with my pet.

False. Dogs and cats are actually experts at hiding when something’s wrong. For example, with heart problems, some pets will only show minor symptoms like coughing. Your vet has been trained to be an expert to look out for early symptoms and subtle signs shown by your pet.

  1. Your pet’s age determines how often you should see the vet

True. Depending on your pet’s age and medical history, they may be a bit more susceptible to certain health issues. For senior pets, experts recommend that they should visit the vet at least twice a year. On the flip side, puppies and kittens should be checked by the vet every month for their first few months. If your adult pet has no previous record of illness, an annual vet check-up is advised.

  1. Check-ups are only useful when vets perform lab tests

False. While vet clinics are constantly updating their equipment and technology, the physical exam is still a crucial part of the examination. Your vet inspects everything from your pet’s ears and eyes to their skin and joints. Based on findings from the physical exam, your vet might then require further diagnostic tests.

  1. You can ask your vet about your pet’s behavioral issues

True. Don’t be shy to ask your vet questions! They’re here to guide you through the many aspects of pet parenting. If you have trouble with your pet’s behavior, anxiety, your vet can be an excellent resource for tips and guidance.
