Did you know that dogs have love languages too?

Just like us, there are some dogs who prefer receiving affection through physical touch and other dogs who would rather receive words of affirmation. Finding your dog’s love language can be extremely useful when training your dog.

Just like us, there are some dogs who prefer receiving affection through physical touch and other dogs who would rather receive words of affirmation. Finding your dog’s love language can be extremely useful when training your dog.

While food is definitely the most popular reward option, expert trainers actually recommend using a mix of reward methods. Whether you have show dog aspirations for your pet or are simply hoping to teach your puppy to pee on the pad instead of the carpet, here are some other options to try!

  • For the dog who loves words of affirmation… Try verbal praise!

Does your dog perk up whenever you call their name? That could be a sign that they’re motivated by praise! Whenever your dog does a trick well or exhibits good behavior, acknowledge your pet with a happy, upbeat tone.

Tip: Tone is really key to verbal praise. Saying the nicest compliments but in a flat tone might not register with your pet.

  • For the dogs who love physical touch…. Try cuddles or belly rubs!

For those with affectionate dogs, this could be the reward to try! Depending on your dog’s preferences, you can try rubbing their belly, scratching their ears, patting their head.

Tip: It’s very important to pay attention to how your dog reacts. If they show any discomfort, your pet might prefer more space rather than physical touch.

  • For the dogs who love gifts… Try toys!

There are dogs who are even more motivated by toys over treats! Keep your dog motivated with their go-to plush toy or their favorite squeaky ball.

Tip: Trainers also suggest rotating the toys you use for rewards. You can ask the team at the Pet Express nearest you for different toy options!

  • For the dogs who love quality time… Try bonding time!

Like other rewards, this is also heavily dependent on your dog’s preferences. Maybe your dog is highly motivated by going on a car ride! You can also have a dog who’s really excited about a trip to the Paw Park, or a dog who wants nothing else than sitting next to you on the couch.

Tip: Try pairing these rewards together with your dog! Combining verbal praise with physical touch can be way more effective than doing either one of those actions on their own.
